WHAT IS MANIPULATION UNDER ANESTHESIA?

M.U.A. is a non-invasive outpatient procedure that is performed at a fully equipped
ambulatory surgery center and is highly effective with chronic musculoskeletal  problems
and for those who suffer from failed surgery When the body becomes injured it responds
by laying down scar tissue which over time can cause immobility and pain. M.U.A. can
help with the following:

  • Chronic Low Back Pain
  • Chronic Neck Pain
  • Pain Due To Herniated or Bulged Discs
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Failed Surgery
  • Frozen Shoulder Syndrome
  • TMJ
  • Chronic Headaches
  • Facet Joint Syndrome
  • Sciatica

THE M.U.A. EXPERIENCE:

The goal of M.U.A. is to restore range of motion and decrease pain by remodeling
(breaking down) the unwanted scar tissue which has formed in or around the joint(s).
Because the patient is under "twilight" sedated they are able to be mobilized, adjusted,
and stretched in a way not possible through traditional chiropractic care.  The procedure
takes approximately 20 minutes with an average of three procedures required over a
three day period.  Most patients feel better almost immediately and experience some
range of motion restoration and pain reduction right away. Some moderate muscle
soreness similar to that experienced after a hard workout is possible.  The greatest
aspect other than the proven recovery research is that many insurance companies
completely pay for this procedure as it is a viable alternative to surgery or a lifelong
dependency of pain medications.

HOW DO I BEGIN AN M.U.A. TREATMENT PLAN?

Using standards of care as described by the National Academy of M.U.A. Physicians,
the chiropractor selects patients. The typical M.U.A. treatment plan begins with a
medical screening process to clear the patient for anesthesia. Medical tests may or may
not include:

  • CBC blood studies
  • SMA 6
  • Chest X-ray and EKG, or electrocardiogram for patients age 50 and older

Your chiropractor may also order additional tests, such as an MRI,  CT (cat scans), and
other diagnostic tests, if needed. After receiving medical clearance, the patient is
scheduled at the facility where the M.U.A. will be performed.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTERWARDS:

Following the last M.U.A. procedure the patient should follow an intensive therapy
program for 7 to 10 days. This post M.U.A. therapy should be the same stretches
accomplished during the M.U.A. procedure and adjustments made in the doctor's office.
This is followed by rehabilitation for the next four to six weeks, including stretching,
flexibility and strengthening exercises, plus periodic adjustments and massage
therapy, as required by the doctor. A regimented program of post-M.U.A. therapy will
help the patient regain both pre-injury strength and help prevent future pain and
disability. This may be done at our facility or at a facility of the patient’s choice.  Our goal
is to return the patient to their normal activities and allow them to obtain a better
lifestyle.  Adhesions can reattach as quickly as 48 hours post procedure so it is crucial
that the patient be compliant with the post procedure protocol.
